“Five Points” in Athens Georgia is most commonly thought of as the intersections of Milledge Ave, Lumpkin, and Milledge Circle. The neighborhood touches the University of Georgia campus, and is known for its blend of students, baby boomers, and professionals who live and work in this area of our community.
It is also the locale for both notable shopping and dining establishments. Want to feel like a kid again? Then Hodgson’s Pharmacy, where you can still get an ice cream cone for seventy-five cents a scoop, is the place to visit! Coffee is a must in a college town, and Jittery Joe’s has been the local coffee haunt for students, thirty-something’s, and boomers like since 1994.
If you are looking for fine dining then the Five and Ten is your stop to find what culinary treasures Chef Hugh Acheson, named as one of Food and Wine’s 10 best new chefs in 2002, dreamed up!
Recently I found a site called Walkscore.com that ranks neighborhoods on their “walkability.” According to the site, the Five Points area of Athens is ranked on a walkability scale equal to the Top 15 neighborhoods in the nation!
Some of the many businesses within walking distance to note are Aromas wine bar, Five Points Deli; homemade salads, bread, desserts, sandwiches & soups, Half Moon Outfitters, Homeplace; toys & books to creative gifts(many locally handcrafted), Jingles florist and gift boutique, and Plain Jane Designs; stationary, invitations, and personalized gifts.
Also worth noting are Slippers unique shoes and accessories, Suska upscale women’s consignment, Urban Sanctuary Spa Massage, and finally Two Chix Lighting; the artistry of fused glass and metal.
As you will discover, Five Points is an active community within Athens that you can leave your cares and your car behind as you enjoy this “green friendly” section of our town!
