Happy New Year Athens

Athens is a city of many generations with a deep-rooted history.  This city, that we often refer to as the “Classic City,” is one with a dynamic culture. Called by some the “Liverpool of the South” for its passion for music yet it is still steeped in Old Southern tradition and charm.

Home to the University of Georgia, Athens is a town of slightly more than 100,000, but if you compare it to postcards from the early 20th century it is still the small, distinguished, cozy town it was when horse pulled trolleys lined College Avenue.  The main difference is that now there is a Starbucks on the corner! Take a stroll downtown on broad sidewalks that line the north edge of the University of Georgia campus where the Arch and memorials from the Civil War and American Revolution mark Broad Street.

When you come to Athens, pay a visit to the Classic Center where you can enjoy productions from their Broadway Series as well as other theatrical productions. In downtown Athens you will find a mix of college students, professionals, and visitors that truly create an international melting pot.

Attend a University sporting event where they still play sports for the love of the game. Cruise down Cobb, Hill, Milledge, Prince and other Athens streets where many homes from the middle to late 1800’s still stand and soak in the Antebellum Deep South.  Did you know that there are sixteen neighborhoods on the National Register of Historic Places?  Make sure you bring your bike and tour these lovely neighborhoods as you wind your way around “Five Points.” We are a community that believes in Green Living!
