The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia; More than a Stroll through the Flowers

Over the past few days it has been easy to get a feel of Spring and a longing for those vernal days of life!  Temperatures outside are approaching 70 degrees, and it seems that everyone has the same idea. People in our community are hitting the parks, nature trails, golf courses, and getting outdoors!

If you, like most Boomers are focused on keeping in shape take a trip to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.  It is a “living laboratory” for students and faculty of UGA who utilize the collections and plant communities for studies in many areas of study. The Garden is located three miles from the University of Georgia campus. It encompasses over 300 acres and borders the Middle Oconee River. The Garden contains specialty gardens and a tropical conservatory, highlighted by a body of native (more than 300 varieties) and exotic plants. If you are worried about a stroll through the gardens not providing much of a cardio workout, there are also five miles of nature trails that span the natural areas of the Garden.  Great for a hike or a run!

The Gardens are also a place of special events throughout the year. In the months of June, July, August, and September enjoy the Sunflower Concert Series.  Bring a picnic or enjoy dinner at CafĂ© Trumps.  The Evergreen Concert Series during the winter months takes place in the tropical conservatory for those not into a colder climate. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Hugh Hodgson School of Music, and UGA Music Business Program cosponsor these free concerts.

Twilight Toasts combine live music, horticultural information, wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres within the Conservatory. This makes for a perfect evening event to meet your friends or make new friends! The State Botanical Garden of Georgia offers plant sales twice per year in spring and fall which are also popular events!

From educational classes to help you hone your horticulture skills, to Special evening Events, Natural Areas, and Trails the State Botanical Gardens is a place in which you can lose yourself and never want to leave!
